Aptitude tests: how to prepare without wasting your time
Which types actually come up, which ones can be trained and which cannot, and the time-management mistake that fails people who knew the answers.
Aptitude tests turn up in public-sector exams, in recruitment processes, in entrance assessments. And they have a feature that makes them very different from a normal exam: almost nothing they ask depends on what you know. There is no syllabus to memorise.
That throws a lot of people, who conclude one of two things, both wrong: either that it cannot be prepared for, or that preparing means doing a thousand tests blind.
It can be prepared for, and it is not by doing a thousand tests. That is what this is about.
What can be trained and what cannot
Worth separating from the start, because it saves a lot of wasted time.
Trains a great deal:
- Number and letter sequences. It is pattern recognition, and the catalogue of patterns is short and closed. This is where you improve most and fastest.
- Time management. The costliest mistake in these tests is not about knowledge.
- Calculations. Not by doing them faster, but by learning not to do them: in a multiple-choice test, estimating is often enough.
Trains somewhat:
- Matrices and figure sequences. There is a repertoire of transformations (rotation, reflection, adding or removing elements) that you learn to recognise.
- Verbal comprehension, synonyms and analogies. It depends on vocabulary, which grows slowly but grows.
Trains little:
- Attention and perception — crossing out differences, counting symbols. You improve a little through familiarity with the format and not much more.
That already tells you where to put the hours: sequences first, then time management, and the attention ones last, where there is least return per hour.
Number sequences: the full method
It is the type that comes up most and responds best to training, so it deserves the detail.
The first move is always the same: write down the differences. Do not think about it, just do it.

The differences are 4, 6, 8, 10 — an easy sequence going up in twos. The next one is 12, so the answer is 30 + 12 = 42.
That alone solves more than half of the sequences you will meet. And if the differences do not sing either, do it again with them: two levels are almost always enough.
The patterns that cover the rest, by frequency: constant addition, constant subtraction, multiplication, division, growing difference, alternating step (two rules taking turns), squares and triangular numbers, and Fibonacci. We have them explained one by one with examples.
The shortcut that saves the most time is looking at the size before calculating anything:
- They grow slowly → differences.
- They shoot up → multiplication, or the sum of the two previous terms.
- They go down → subtraction or division.
Three seconds on that saves you a minute of trying the wrong family.
The mistake that fails people who knew the answers
Here is the important part of this article, and it has nothing to do with ability.
Aptitude tests are very tight on time, deliberately. Almost nobody finishes them, and they are designed that way. What the test measures is not only whether you can solve the items, but how many you solve in the time given.
And that is where people lose out: they get stuck on question 7, dig in, spend four minutes, and never reach questions 30 to 40 — which might have been easy.
The rule, and it is worth drilling until it happens by itself:
If you cannot see the way in within 30 seconds, mark it and move on.
Do a first fast pass taking everything that falls without resistance. Then come back to the marked ones with whatever time is left. This raises scores more than any specific technique, and requires learning nothing new.
How to use the options
In a multiple-choice test, the options are information, not just where you tick.
- If your pattern gives 42 and there is no 42, stop: the pattern is wrong. It is an instant alarm.
- If you are torn between two rules, see which one lands on an available option.
- In calculation items, estimate before calculating. If the options are 340, 1,180, 1,240 and 3,900, you do not need the exact sum: the order of magnitude rules out three.
About wrong answers
Always check whether the test penalises errors, and by how much. It changes the strategy completely:
- No penalty: answer absolutely everything. Leaving a blank is giving away marks.
- With a penalty (typically −0.25 or −0.33 per error): answer only if you have managed to rule out at least one option. With four options and one ruled out, the bet is already in your favour. Blind, it is not.
This is always in the instructions and there is always someone who does not read them.
A realistic preparation plan
If you have three or four weeks:
Week 1 — recognise. Sequences only, lots of them, no clock. The aim is not to get them right, it is to identify the family. After each one, even the ones you get right, ask yourself «which type was that?». That question is worth more than doing ten more blind.
Week 2 — widen. Add matrices and figures. Same method: identify the transformation (rotates, reflects, adds an element) before looking at the options.
Week 3 — clock. Now with time. And practise the decision to skip, which is a skill in itself and has to be trained like the rest.
Week 4 — full mock tests. The whole thing, in one sitting, under conditions. By now you are not learning content: you are learning to manage fatigue and order.
And one thing that sounds silly and is not: sleep well the night before. These tests measure processing speed, which is exactly what suffers most from bad sleep. One bad night costs you more marks than the last week of study.
Where to practise without spending money
You do not need to buy workbooks for the essentials. Sequences are trained with any source that gives you many, varied, with the answer.

One last note, because it is worth saying: aptitude tests measure what they measure, which is a specific way of reasoning under time pressure. They do not measure how clever you are or how good you will be in the job. Preparing them is worth it because there is a test in front of you, not because the number that comes out says anything important about you.
