Real proverbs, not made-up ones

Plenty of worksheets online are full of “proverbs” nobody has ever said. These are the sayings people actually grew up with: “The early bird catches the worm”, “A stitch in time saves nine”, “Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight”… The whole point of the exercise is that the ending comes back by itself, and that only happens with a proverb you have genuinely heard.

Ideas for a proverbs session

  • Out loud first. The organiser reads the beginning and the group finishes it together. Then the paper sheet, everyone at their own pace.
  • What does it mean? Pick two or three proverbs from the sheet and ask what they mean and when people say them. The stories follow.
  • Weather sayings. “Red sky at night” or “It never rains but it pours” link nicely with orientation: what month it is, what the weather is doing.
  • Easy to harder. Start with the matching sheet, which needs no writing, then move on to finishing the proverbs.

More large-print sheets

Proverbs also turn up alongside other activities in the memory activities for seniors and the large-print activity sheets. To keep going with words, there are easy crosswords and word searches in large print.

Frequently asked questions

How many proverbs are there?

122 well-known English proverbs, spread across sheets of eight to finish and sheets of six to match up. They are all real sayings you will find in any dictionary of proverbs: none are made up or translated from another language.

What is the difference between the two sheets?

In “Finish the proverb” you get the beginning and write the ending. In “Match the proverbs” the endings are jumbled in the right-hand column and you join them up with a line: it is easier, and good for starting out or when writing is difficult.

Why do they work so well with older adults?

Because they live in long-term memory: they were learnt decades ago and tend to come back on their own, even when recent things are harder to recall. And they are great for conversation: what each one means, who used to say it, when it came up.

Do they come with answers?

Yes, on a separate page at the end, with the full proverb. You can remove them before printing with the answers button.

Can I use them in an English class?

Yes. Finishing proverbs is a popular ESL activity from intermediate level, and the matching sheet works well in pairs. The sheets are free to print for your classroom.
